The annual wage for Educational Counselor is $50,000 per year, and it is a full-time job. The following are the job requirements:
- Evaluate students’ abilities and interests, using tests, records, interviews, or professional sources to develop studying strategies or potential academic career paths for the student, including international students;
- Assessing foreign students’ English proficiency. Design language study strategies and provide advice and skills to help them attain sufficient English proficiency in the shortest amount of time;
- Use communicative language teaching method, based on the student’s learning ability, design and implement lessons plan;
- Analyze effective/ineffective practices, study habits, use programs to develop strategies, and monitor for the development of academic proficiency of students;
- Determine whether there are individual, socio-cultural, language, or academic factors affecting students’ learning ability, or ability to acquire knowledge of specific subjects, and how these factors promote or interrupt the student’s education;
- Monitor whether teaching/tutoring methodology, cultural, linguistic, or behavioral issues are affecting student performance and make adjustments in academic plans or recommend tutoring or other preparation courses;
- Review academic records to ensure that students meet graduation or college entrance requirements;
- Supervise student tutors, coordinate with tutors, college admission advisers and other students service providers to provide holistic approach and plans to achieve maximum results, provide periodical report to students and parents;
- Advise students on educational issues. Assess the progress made, adjust curriculum, strategies, tutoring courses, study habits, test preparation, academic career planning or studying approaches to meet the needs of the student to succeed academically and refer students to the appropriate services to ensure they reach their goals;
- Counsel international students to help them understand the U.S. educational system and cognitive learning methods for academic success;
- Refer students to degree programs based on interests, aptitudes, or educational assessments;
- Conduct orientation programs to promote the adjustment of students to new life experiences, such as starting college;
- Bachelor degree in Education Science is required. 150 hours of training in teaching/assessing English as Second Language is required. English proficiency is required.
