学校概况

相比于美国其他著名高校来讲，加州大学洛杉矶分校的历史是比较短的。1919年5月23日，当时的加州州长William D. Stephens签署命令成立加州大学南部分部（Southern Branch），学校的创始人是导演Ernest Carroll Moore。学校于1927年正式改名为University of California at Los Angeles，直到1958年才改为现在的名称。在创立最初的十年里，学校位于今天称为Vermont Avenue的地方。1927年9月21日，新校区开始修建。1929年，加州大学洛杉矶分校搬到了今天的校址Westwood，临近比佛利山庄(Beverley Hill)、盖蒂艺术中心(Getty Center)与好莱坞(Hollywood) 。学校最初的四幢建筑是Royce Hall， Powell Library， Haines Hall和Kinsey Hall，当时学校有5500名学生。1933年，学校开始设立硕士学位，3年后开始设立博士学位。加州大学洛杉矶分校在二战后的25年中取得了重大的发展：修建大量的校舍，以及学生人数大增。现在，加州大学洛杉矶分校共有163栋建筑，占地419英亩，设有109个学术系、12个专业学院、800个研究机构，共有本科生24,800人，研究生12,400人，专任教师3800人。

加州大学洛杉矶分校先后共有12位教授和毕业生们获得过诺贝尔奖。2006年，加州大学洛杉矶分校数学系31岁的澳籍华裔教授陶哲轩（Terence Tao）获得数学领域的诺贝尔奖--菲尔兹奖。2009年，毕业于加州大学洛杉矶分校的经济学家埃莉诺·奥斯特罗姆(Elinor Ostrom)获得了当年的诺贝尔经济学奖，成为了历史上首位获得诺贝尔经济学奖的女性。2010年，毕业于加州大学洛杉矶分校的校友Richard Heck获得了当年的诺贝尔化学奖。加州大学洛杉矶分校的教授中，有105位美国科学与艺术学院院士，86位美国科学促进学会会员，40位美国科学院院士，20位美国工程院院士，34位美国医学研究院院士，16位美国哲学院院士。此外，学校在历史上共有10位美国国家科学研究金奖得主（与哈佛数量相同）。
