中央佛罗里达大学是佛罗里达州立大学的成员之一，1963年为了给位于学校东部56公里的肯尼迪航天中心提供高素质 的航天技术培训而以佛罗里达工程大学名字建校。1978年因为学术研究已经几乎扩展到所有领域而更名为中佛罗里达大学。1990年，学校建立了空间教育与研究中心。

大学的所在地奥兰多是美国南部观光胜地，除了一年四季的气候非常的适宜外 ，其众多的主题乐园区每年吸引美国本土及世界各地数以百万的游客到此朝圣。其著名的主题乐园区包括迪斯尼乐园，海洋世界，米高梅及环球影城及肯尼迪航空中心等大型游乐设施。学校距离机场约半小时车程。

大学的官方颜色是黑色和金色，不同的运动队都叫骑士。学校的吉祥物是一个名叫Knightro的全副盔甲的骑士。学校校徽是一个飞马。
