圣路易斯大学建于1818年，是一所天主教大学，不但是密苏里州历史最悠久的大学之一，也是美国第2大的天主教学校。其研究实力在全美大学中名列前茅。大学设有85个本科专业和50多个研究生专业，有11800余名学生。大学的课程设置和教学反映了现实世界的需求，并注重鼓励学生参与社区服务，大学也为学生提供就业咨询服务。

圣路易斯大学校内目前计有1万1千名学生。以2004-05年入学情况分析，学生中有7,000名为大学部学生，4,000名研究所学生（包括医学院621位与法学院学生855位）；学生除了来自于全美50州外，也有来自全球80个不同国家的国际学生。

根据校方统计，2005年申请入学大学部的人数约有8,000位，其中1,500位被接受。大学部申请的门坎，学生在校成绩GPA至少要3.66以上、ACT考试成绩至少要26.1分；据估计，申请入学成功的学生内有3分之1在高中时期的成绩为班上的前10%。
