拉文大学创立于1891年，是美国西部最古老的国家级大学之一。其前身是教会创立的洛兹伯格学院。1917年洛兹伯格农业社区更名为拉文，学院也随之成为拉文学院。学校的教师教育课程和MBA犹为著名。1977年，学院正式更名为拉文大学。1981年在橘县设立分校区，紧接着在旧金山、肯县、圣路易斯等地都设立校区，在阿拉斯加州为军队开办的教学点，并在希腊开办一所分校。2013年拉文大学本科综合排名跻身《美国新闻与世界报道》全国顶尖院校前百。2017USNEWS美国综合性大学排名第152。
